Lets hear it for the Girls!
Olympic History was made today at Eton Dorney, when P.E. teacher Helen Glover ,and a career soldier Heather Stanning ,became the first Great British women to win a gold medal at the Olympics.
Five days into the London 2012 Olympics and the nation finally gets to rejoice a gold medal, people were crowded around TV sets, slapping car bonnets and fist-pumping the air, finally we're off the mark. The first British medal of 2012 was won by Lizzie Arminstead in cycling who won an impressive silver medal in the women's road race.
And with nothing but a casual nod to the GB men's rowing Eight ,who despite a gutsy performance against a dominant German eight, slipped to a bronze after leading the race.
Fitting ,maybe ,after days of competition where women's sport seems to have taken a grip of the nation it was the two accomplished rowers with just three years as a pair that sent the Great Britain into raptures.
Women's sport attracts 0.5% of the sponsorship and just 5% of the coverage that men receive, but it's the female Olympians that are grabbing our imagination. When financial resources are so heavily stacked against the girls, the more attention they can get through skill and hard work will surely be replicated by financial rewards for their sport.
If its entertaining footie your after look no further than the Team GB women's football team. They won all three of their group games with style and heart, beating the famous Brazil in the process. Stuart Pearce, eat your heart out.
The women's hockey team have won twice looking classy in the process whereas the basketball team have struggled valiantly against superior opposition.
So lets hear it for the girls, who are winning the battle for our hearts, the hard way-by outperforming the men.
