Never before has sport been so defined by the matter of coin, never before has our culture been so defined by sport.
As I begin this blog, it would be wrong to suggest this is in a sense a reaction to the most costly sporting and cultural event ever to be staged here in the UK. If that was the case this blog could of been in reaction to the thousands of news reports and press releases since we won the right to host the summer Olympics back in 2005. The 2012 was sold to the nation as the 'cultural' games. But has this promise been fulfilled?
Our more well-known sportsmen have begun to define our culture, and the men at the top of the world's most influential sporting institutions have begun to define our greed. Is there a growing sense of dis-enchantment with sports governing bodies?
With sports men and women attracting more fame therefore more influence and power amongst the masses they are being forever used by politicians worldwide for unworthy causes and by those with money to extend their power. Sport is increasingly becoming a tool and indeed a weapon for men-in-suits and money men to abuse a national culture and a national identity to increase personal power. Are these the right people to be running sport?
